What is Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO?

Although Search Engine Optimisation has been discussed by many, not all people understand what it means or why it’s important. The main purpose of SEO (search engine results page or SERP) is to increase website traffic. SEO can make a significant difference in the success of your site or business. Your website or business would be at the top on major search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. Google, Bing, and Yahoo are the top search engines for people searching for something. They will most likely click on your site when they do. According to some estimates, at least half of people searching for something click on the first result because it’s the most popular and is perceived as being the best. What is the best way to rank high in search engines?

What are the best search terms?

Prior to trying to climb to the top in a search engine, it is important to identify the search terms you would like to appear at the top. It would be absurd to try to rank for search terms like sport and cars if you’re a web designer company. It is obvious, but it is not hard to see. Sport is searched 4090,000 times per month. Cars are searched 1,220,000 each month. Web design is searched 31,000 every month. Although they may get searched more frequently than web design, it’s not relevant. You would also be misleading those who search for sport and cars. They won’t be returning to your site again and will likely never search for web design. If you’re a web designer company, would web design make the most sense as a search term? Both yes and no. It is because it is the most searched term in web design, but there are many competitors. A web design firm that is at the top search engine results page for web design would have a lot more customers. I’m sure they also know lots about SEO and being in the industry for long periods of time. Search web design brings up approximately 500,000,000 results. You are unlikely to be found on the first pages of any search engine for web designing. We will narrow down your search terms.

How can you reduce the search term that is most relevant to you?

There are many things you should consider when narrowing your search terms. Are you looking to reach a particular area? You want customers that have unlimited budgets or who are willing to pay a premium. You can narrow your search by focusing on specific audiences and planning what you would like to achieve from it. Web Design Nottingham could be your perfect keyword. This is because you’re a Nottingham-based web designer company and want to be the best. Web design Nottingham is more popular than web design anywhere else in Nottingham. Web Design In Nottingham may sound better, but only 73 people search this keyword per month. Web Design Nottingham gets searched 2,400 times each month. Although 2,400 represents a significant drop in search volume from 301,000, the number of competitors has fallen from 534,000 to 500,000,000. There is a 1:661 competition for web design results, while web design Nottingham boasts a 2:25 competition per result. The competition is much lower and people searching for web design services are more inclined to buy it than learn or study about it. You can also narrow your search terms in other ways. For example, if you are a car dealer and only want to sell one specific model of second-hand vehicle (e.g. Ford Focus Second Hand means that you’re targeting 1,900 potential buyers per month for Ford Focus Second Hand.

You have chosen a search term. Now, how can you reach the top of that search?

This step is both the most difficult and time-consuming in search engine optimization. Once you have determined what search term(s) your term is, now it’s time to rank high in search engines for the term. Although there are many factors that need to be considered when optimizing search engines, I will only briefly touch on the most important. If you want to achieve real results I recommend hiring a professional SEO firm or web design agency to do search engine optimization. These are the most important aspects that anyone can perform.

Factor 1: Fresh Content

New, unique and original content is what search engines are looking for. Do not copy others’ work. You will be able to make a big difference by coming up with new ideas and writing your content. Include your search terms, also known as keywords. This will help a search engine recognize your content and pull up the relevant results when someone searches it. You’d rather spend hours working on one page, than copying the work of others. You can copy content from someone else and make it yours. Search engines crawl all pages found on the web. They will flag your site down if you are caught copying someone else’s content. Your website will then struggle to make it onto the first page. A search engine can detect if you update your content regularly and will work for your advantage (so long as it is relevant to your site) and help improve your ranking.

Factor 2 – Keyword Density

Ranking high in search engines is also dependent on keyword density. The keyword refers to a search term. In order to maintain the theme of my earlier post, web design Nottingham was the key keyword. Density is simply the number of times a keyword appears in comparison to other keywords. Finding the percent of keywords you have can take a lot of time and be difficult to do accurately. However, there are many online tools to help you do this.

Although there is not a set density at which keywords should be placed for search engines to recognize, guidelines are available. Some believe that between 2 and 4 percent is the ideal amount, while others think it is optimal to have 4-6%. All opinions are valid. It doesn’t matter what your keywords do to readers or search engines. Avoid keyword spamming. Search engines may mark you down and if you get to the top of a site’s search engine, search engines might reject your results. But don’t forget to include your keywords in your content. You can’t place them too often. Otherwise search engines won’t pick up your desired search term. Because of my beliefs about the algorithm of search engines, I like to include my keyword in the beginning of every article. However, the more you create content and become more proficient at SEO you will also have opinions as to what is best.

Meta Data Factor 3

While things become more difficult, anyone who understands the article can still comprehend them. The title, description, and keywords are what a search engine sees. A reader will not be able to read meta data. Some software packages include add-ons for importing meta data. If you don’t have the right tools, you can manually input it. A meta title can be described as the name of the website you’re creating. It shouldn’t exceed 60 characters and should not make any sense. The meta title of a website design company’s home page might say “Web Design Nottingham | Web Designers” or something along that effect. While it might not be understandable, or even a sentence, search engines would recognize these words as important and know what the content means.

Meta Description follows the Meta Title. This is longer and more clear for search engine users. The Meta Description should not be more than 160 words long and include the keywords. This could read, “We’re the #1 web design firm in Nottingham.” We provide the most innovative web design ……” and so forth. Meta Keywords are the last piece of Meta Data. The Meta Keywords is the final piece of meta data. It should look like a list separated by a comma. It might look something like this for web designers: “web design, web developers, web design Nottingham ” and so forth. While there’s no limit on how many you can add, it is best to not spam the page with excessive keywords. Only enter one keyword at a time.

Factor 4-Back Links

An internal link linking from your website to another web page is called a back link. It is necessary because when a search engine finds one of your webpages, it scans and indexes that particular page. If there are no links from the page, it cannot scan or index any other webpage in your domain. For example (all links use a semi colon and not a full colon to prevent actual link’s) “http;//www.madeupwebsite.co.uk/page1” has a link on it to “http;//www.madeupwebsite.co.uk/page2” therefore a search engine can scan and index “http;//www.madeupwebsite.co.uk/page1” an notice the link. It will then follow the link to “http;//www.madeupwebsite.co.uk/page2” and index that as well. It is crucial because it will only index one page of your site. If this happens, all of them won’t be found when someone searches. You will need to rely on search engines finding you website and looking through your pages in order for your website get discovered. You should also think about how you will link pages to each other. A sitemap is a great way to do this, however you also have the option of adding on-page links. This will increase your SEO by linking keywords with pages optimized for those keyword phrases. Let’s say a website page has been optimized for webdesign. If the keyword density is high and your meta data contains web design, why not link webdesign from the first page to the webdesign page?

Factor 5 – Anchor Text and External Linking

Anchor text refers to words linking to a particular link. Sounds a bit confusing but instead of a a link reading “please feel free to click this link for web design “http;//www.madeupwebsite.co.uk” you could always place the link so it read “please feel free to click this link for web design” linking the word web design to “http;//www.madeupwebsite.co.uk”. Again with web design software and add on’s this is made easy but if its in HTML you would use “< href=” website “>keyword” and this would link your keyword to a website.

You are telling the search engine exactly what link you have. A search engine will index your web site higher if the anchor text contains web design keywords and the page that you link to has web design content. While this doesn’t guarantee you a spot at the top search engines, and only one link will do it, search here to see how many links can be used to make your search more powerful. Click here to search for Adobe Reader. Because click here is an important tool people might need, many people have linked the word to it.

This doesn’t mean it ends there

There are many other factors involved in search engine optimization that I did not mention. Although you could study more SEO strategies, this can take many years. Also, the internet is constantly growing and expanding so I suggest that SEO be left to experts. If you don’t understand search engine optimization you might make matters worse for your website. There are many websites that provide information on SEO. You can also find a lot of articles and resources. However, the truth is that there are many other sources and sites you could look at.

You can learn the best search engine optimization methods by trying them out. But it is a slow process that takes time. Never trust a company promising a page one rank in all search engines in just a few days. This is impossible. This is a guarantee that a company makes, but it’s more likely they will claim an adwords campaign. It doesn’t provide the same results and costs more.
