Joseph’s Dreams and His Brothers’ Jealousy

Joseph was one of Jacob’s twelve sons and was deeply loved by his father, who gave him a special coat of many colors (Genesis 37:3). This favoritism made his brothers jealous. Things got worse when Joseph shared two dreams he had. In one dream, his brothers’ sheaves of grain bowed to his sheaf. In another, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed to him (Genesis 37:6-9). These dreams symbolized Joseph’s future greatness, but they angered his brothers even more.

Betrayed and Sold into Slavery

One day, Joseph’s brothers plotted against him while they were tending their flocks. They threw him into a dry pit and later sold him to Ishmaelite traders for twenty pieces of silver (Genesis 37:28). To cover up their actions, they dipped Joseph’s coat in goat’s blood and told their father he had been killed by a wild animal. Meanwhile, Joseph was taken to Egypt and sold as a slave to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh.

Even as a slave, Joseph prospered because “the Lord was with him” (Genesis 39:2). Potiphar trusted Joseph and put him in charge of his entire household. However, Potiphar’s wife falsely accused Joseph of trying to harm her after he refused her advances. As a result, Joseph was thrown into prison (Genesis 39:20).

While in prison, Joseph continued to find favor with God. He was put in charge of other prisoners. During this time, two of Pharaoh’s officials—the cupbearer and the baker—were imprisoned and had troubling dreams. With God’s help, Joseph interpreted their dreams accurately: the cupbearer would be restored to his position, while the baker would be executed (Genesis 40:12-22). Though the cupbearer promised to remember Joseph, he forgot about him for two years.

Pharaoh’s Dreams and Joseph’s Rise

Pharaoh later had two disturbing dreams that no one could interpret. The cupbearer finally remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh about him. Brought before Pharaoh, Joseph explained that God provided interpretations. He revealed that Pharaoh’s dreams predicted seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine (Genesis 41:25-30).

Pharaoh was so impressed with Joseph’s wisdom that he made him second-in-command over Egypt (Genesis 41:39-41). During the years of abundance, Joseph stored grain to prepare for the famine.

Joseph Reunites with His Brothers

When the famine struck, Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to buy food. They unknowingly bowed before Joseph, fulfilling his earlier dreams (Genesis 42:6). Although Joseph recognized them immediately, he didn’t reveal his identity right away. Instead, he tested their character by accusing them of being spies and demanding they bring their youngest brother, Benjamin.

After several interactions and seeing their remorse for selling him into slavery (Genesis 42:21), Joseph could no longer hold back his emotions. He revealed himself to his brothers with tears and said, “You meant evil against me; but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20). He forgave them completely.

Joseph Saves His Family

Joseph invited his entire family to live in Egypt during the famine. They settled in Goshen, where he provided for them generously (Genesis 47:11-12). Before Jacob died, he blessed all his sons and expressed gratitude for being reunited with Joseph.

Joseph’s Legacy

Joseph lived to see several generations of his family before dying at the age of 110. Before his death, he reminded his family that God would one day bring them back to the Promised Land (Genesis 50:24-25).
